Although the competition is titled “Gingerbread House Competition”, entries are not limited to the structure of a house.  Competitors are welcome and encouraged to uniquely design their entry as long as it follows the competition rules.

All entries will be judged on the following criteria:
  1. Overall Appearance
  2. Difficulty
  3. Creativity and originality
  4. Technique and skills

Prizes will be awarded for the winner of each category.

Each entry must be placed on a board base. We suggest using ½” or ¾” plywood base for your entry.  Use of risers or feet on the bottom of the base is preferred but not required. Risers/feet are considered part of the base and should not cause the entry’s overall height to exceed 24 inches.

Everything above the base of your entry must be constructed and composed of 100% edible materials.  The main structure of your entry must be constructed of at least 75% gingerbread, some of which should be exposed.  Edible materials are not limited to candies and icing.  Use of gum paste, fondant, pastillage, modeling chocolate, royal icing, isomalt, cast sugar, gelatin and pressed sugar are encouraged.  No artificial display materials, such as Styrofoam are to be used in the construction or decoration of the entry.  Non-edible materials such as paint and/or ribbon are approved (and encouraged) to decorate the outer edge of your plywood base only.

Entries must be solely constructed by the individual entering the competition. Youth and child competitors may be supervised, for safety precautions, by a parent/guardian or classroom teacher.  Example: Assistance with operating the stovetop or oven.

Entry and authorization forms are to be completed for photos of the entries and public display for the event.  A brief description will be required on the Entry Form.

Gingerbread Houses should be delivered to the Innisfil ideaLAB and Library, Lakeshore Branch, between 5:00 and 7:00 pm on the day before the event.

All entries will need to be picked up and removed from the ideaLAB and Library when the competition ends by 3pm.  Entries not picked up will be donated or disposed of by the event committee.
