Rotary Club of Innisfil Unveils Two Stunning New Peace Poles, Continuing Global Tradition
In a vibrant celebration of art, community, and the universal message of peace, the Rotary Club of Innisfil proudly unveiled two new Peace Poles on September 25, 2024. These striking monuments, one adorned with the colorful, collaborative work of Jamie Hardy, along with Rotary members and their families, and the other beautifully crafted by local artist Alyssa Krane, add to the town's growing collection of peace symbols.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is Rotary's leadership training program for young people to further develop character and leadership skills and learn about Rotary. RYLA participants can be ages 14-30, but most clubs and districts choose to focus on a narrower age range, such as 14-18 Watch for request for applications for camp to be held April 18-21/2024 or contact us at rotaryinnisfil@gmail.com to be emailed an application when they are available.
Here is a little video Tim created to show off our new paint job and lighting for the Engine of the Rotary Train, just in time for the upcoming Santa Claus Parades and our Sandy Cove Acres Food Drive. It's going to look amazing at night.
Jennifer Richardson from Connecting Innisfil (as well as the newly elected ward three councillor) reached out to President Tim and asked him to be one of the panel of judges for this event, which is now in its third year. The amount of choice was spectacular, making this a super hard decision. From super elegance to super colourful, you can see the level of imagination that all of the participants put into their homes. There were fifty five entries this year, spread out around most of the town. On Saturday, December 17th - Tim was very proud to present the Rotary choice award to the Gilford based family. Great work to Jennifer, the homeowners who participated and all of the judges involved. One thing to note that it was delightful to see so many designs by people who didn't even enter the contest! The Rotary Club of Innisfil were proud to support Connecting Innisfil's 3rd Annual Halloween House Decorating Contest this year by choosing one of the winning houses for an award. It was a long and spoooooky decision due to the spectacular amount of work all of the participants put in; but our choice this year was 952 Vance Crescent in Alcona.

Remembrance Day! Always important and with many ways to acknowledge the sacrifices of a few for the good of many. For those of you signed up, I look forward to seeing you on Thursday. Otherwise, there will be multiple ceremonies on the 11th, including one graciously hosted by the Town of Innisfil.

Also - any one up for coordinating the project with Innisfilm? We need to keep an open communication channel - can you help?

Lets get a jump start on the KOA car show which promises to be a big one this year. A reminder that the crew at KOA have been exceptionally supportive of our Trail fundraising. This is another opportunity to be out in the community and proceeds will benefit our efforts as well the the local Boy Scouts.

September 10th. Set up around 9:30am with teardown expected around 4:30pm.
In the little Town of Innisfil we find a creative group looking to put Innisfil on the map.
Innisfilm presented us their film (which would appeal to anyone who has every tried to get through high school exams), as well as a brief outline of themselves.
I would encourage you to look them up if you, or someone you know, has a budding interest in the visual arts and related technical fields.
They don't ask for a full-time commitment, but rather a project-based approached, join in when you have time or a project that appeals to you starts up.
Lights, Camera or being the "Action" - support and guidance is available to all who want to explore the art of film.

Any one who has applied themselves to a manual labour knows that it can be cathartic. Wednesdays display was a wonderfully visual reminder of the human ability to create and to capture emotion in an object! I hope you will all be able to join us for this weeks meeting (regular time, regular place, awesome company)!

In addition, we were able to present KOA Cookstown with their cheque! The KOA does wonderful work to ensure cancer patients and their families have an opportunity each year to get outside, play and connect!

From baking, to packaging to set up and tear down - thank you to everyone for their effort and participation!
Any market that sells buttertarts and fresh strawberries is bound for success... but with the Rotary tent set up between fresh popcorn and the buttertart prize winner, we were in good company!
Like anything Rotary does, our VOLUNTEERS are essential, and with Saturday no exception, a heartfelt thanks goes to all the volunteers of the day.
There was building and sorting and fetching and running....and that was all before 9am!
But, our volunteers kept their energy up, stayed focused (and hopefully hydrated.) The train crew worked tirelessly with the train being the main attraction for the families.
Hot Dogs were on order, with our volunteers cooking alongside the food.
When all was said and done, we can't forget our participants. Setting up and being in the heat, the enthusiasm and energy remained tangible!
Games, information and - the always popular parks & rec vehicles - provided opportunities for children of all ages to try their hand at something!
Thank you so much to Judy, Janet and Richard for working so hard behind the scenes to get the day organised! And thank you to everyone you gave their time and energy to making the 2016 event such a success!

The Rotary Club of Innisfil presented an update to the Innisfil Town Council about the Rotary Trail, a multi-use trail that is proposed to have walking, biking, and accessibility trails along with a BMX Pump Track and a Living Classroom.
It was announced to Council that the Rotary Club of Innisfil was successful with their Capital Grant Application to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for $150,000. This will be the foundation to the first phase of the three to five year project, which will be starting construction this Spring. The Trail is to encompass 60+ acres located south of the Innisfil Town Hall and Works department and run adjacent to the Innisfil Recreation Complex.
Reflecting on the Inspiring Innisfil 2020 plan, the Rotary Club, was given approval in principle in 2011 a look to see how it would create a Trail that would align with the Strategic Plan. Linking the community through walking and cycling will fit with the planned active transportation link from Alcona to the Municipal Campus when Innisfil Beach Road is reconstructed by the County of Simcoe. There will also be a link to other County trail systems such as Simcoe and Huronia Trails and the Trans Canada Trail. The Tourism Arts Culture and Heritage focus will be seen through the Living Classroom, a trail study of our local history, flora, fauna, and ecosystem.
The Trillium grant has set a tight timeline for the first phase completion by the end of this year but we think with a partnership with the Town, and the community, they can achieve its collective goals.
The town will partner with the Rotary Club in designing and developing the project. Town employees will maintain the trail system. Work could start as early as this April.

For the months of December and January the Rotary Club of Innisfil is doing something with a twist. Normally we bring monthly food bank items throughout the year, however it was brought to the attention of our Sgt-at-Arms that there is a great need for socks. Yes socks! The Innisfil Community Church, Free Clothing Store, has a need for socks, both adult and childrens'. At the end of January the store opens up to the poor and needy people of Innisfil, and it is free. Please keep their tender tootsie's warm by helping us with our Rotary Sock Drive.
How can you do this? Check out your sock drawer! You may have new or gently used socks that don't suit your needs or no longer wear. This will give you a great opportunity to free up some drawer space. You may also want to donate new socks. They can be white socks, colourful socks, short socks, knee socks. Socks with toes and and sock with no holes!
Please bring your donations to the meetings or arrange for one of our Rotarian to drop by and pick them up. You can email rotaryinnisfil@gmail.com to arrange pickup.
Recently, at the 7th Annual Innisfil Rotary Lights and Wishes event, the Rotary Club recognized three very special people with Unsung Hero Awards. An Unsung Hero is a non-Rotarian who goes above and beyond through volunteering in and around the community. There are two awards - one for youth for the ages of 14 to 19 and one for adults for ages of 20 and above.
Three years ago, our Rotary club decided to honour people in our community who help others without looking for recognition for their actions. Rotary’s motto is ‘Service above self’, and we wanted to find and recognize people from Innisfil who have contributed something special to our community and who also reflect this motto, as they go about helping out residents in our Town. We know Innisfil has many Unsung Heroes who quietly make improvements and do ‘good’ for others, and we’ve started asking the community to help us find them. Every year now, we have received several Unsung Hero nominations from people in Innisfil who know someone out there who is doing good things to help others and improve our community.
Each recipient is awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship. When given as recognition to a non-Rotarian it is one of the highest recognition awards that a Rotary Club can give. Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary International, recognized the importance of how individuals could help their local and global community through volunteering, fundraising, and building awareness of concerns. By looking at these areas of focus the Rotary Club of Innisfil wanted to bestow the same honour to local volunteers. Serving others and making lives better, is what Rotary is all about, whether it’s in our own community, or in the worldwide community. So, we feel, an Unsung Hero is really a Rotarian in disguise, doing the kinds of things for others that Rotarians do. That's why, when our Unsung Hero project was born, we decided we would recognize each of our heroes with a Paul Harris award.
The person selected for our Unsung Hero Youth Award is Ryan Harding, young man who volunteers at the library, helping with after school programs like Lego League. He is described by his nominators as always having a positive and caring attitude towards the younger children, always being reliable and willing to help wherever he can, and often going above and beyond to help others. His calm and gentle demeanor makes him a perfect role model for children in the community.
In addition to a Paul Harris Award, our youth Unsung Hero will receive a $500 Bursary provided by the Town of Innisfil, which he can use once he completes high school and heads off to college or university. He will also receive a free Three Month Pass to the YMCA here in Innisfil.
We also have an Adult Unsung Hero Award. The Rotary Club ran into a unique situation in that two ladies were nominated as a joint submission for the award. The recipients of this year's award were Elaine MacKinnon and Jamie MacKinnon. Both were nominated for the work they do at Goodfellow Public School.
Elaine is a lead volunteer who spends several days a week helping out. In addition to training other volunteers, Elaine is responsible for organizing and purchasing all the food for the school's Eat Well to Excel Snack program and the Fun Lunch program. She always volunteers for special events held at the school and is a member of the School Council.
Jamie MacKinnon is an exceptional volunteer at the school who runs the Fun Lunch program each week, providing milk and a hot lunch for students. Jamie plans, organizes orders, and works with the secretaries and School Council almost daily. She has built a great relationship with children and provides free lunches for students in need.
Both Elaine and Jamie work tirelessly throughout the school year and the summer to build connections with the community in order to successfully provide these services at Goodfellow.
In addition to a Paul Harris award, Elaine and Jamie will each receive a gift basket of goodies and gift cards from around Innisfil, as well as a free Three Month Pass to the YMCA.

On December 5th, at the Innisfil Recreation Complex/YMCA, the Rotary Club of Innisfil held the 7th Annual Lights & Wishes. Visits and photos with Santa, craft tables for the kids, face painting, and rides on the Rotary Train were enjoyed by all. The funds raised through the silent auction, sales of Christmas ornaments and generous donations through our local sponsors will help local children, adults, and seniors be able to attend programs at the YMCA, when they normally are unable to.
Remembrance Day (sometimes known as Poppy Day) is a day observed every November 11th since the end of the First World War, to recall the end of fighting on November 11th, 1918. It is to remember all those in the armed forces who have died in the line of duty during and since. In 1919 King George V inaugurated the tradition in 1919. Hostilities formally ended "at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month", in accordance with the armistice signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente between 5:12 and 5:20 that morning. ("At the 11th hour" refers to the passing of the 11th hour, or 11:00 am.) The First World War officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on 28 June 1919.
The red remembrance poppy has become a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day due to the poem "In Flanders Fields" written by Canadian physician Lieutenant-ColonelJohn McCrae. After reading the poem, Moina Michael, a professor at the University of Georgia, wrote the poem, "We Shall Remember," and swore to wear a red poppy on the anniversary. The custom spread to Europe and the countries of the British Empire and Commonwealth within three years. Poppies were worn for the first time at the 1921 anniversary ceremony. At first real poppies were worn. These poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I; their brilliant red colour became a symbol for the blood spilled in the war.
With all of this in mind, the Town of Innisfil hosted a Remembrance Day tradition of the laying of wreaths at the Innisfil Cenotaph. The Rotary Club of Innisfil was honoured to join in the ceremonies with President Doug Weber laying a wreath in remembrance. Also at our Club meeting we held a reading of the poem "In Flanders Fields" and its historical background presented by Rotarian Grace Doiron. Lest we forget.
A sweet way to fundraise! The Rotary Club of Innisfil has teamed up with Dickey Bee Honey to create honey gift baskets. Full of delicious honey products, these baskets are great for customer and service appreciation gifts, hostess and teacher gifts, gifts, thank you's, or for that special someone. On Thursday October 8th the Innisfil Chamber of Commerce monthly MI5 networking event, and the Rotary Club of Innisfil's Meet and Greet was held at the Innisfil Town Hall. Members of both came out to meet with others from the community. Mayor Gord Wauchope, Deputy Mayor Lynn Dollin, and Councillor Donna Orsatti were also in attendance. The Rotary Train was lit up at the door entrance and many of the Rotary Committees had tables showcasing some of there community and global services, as well as the Rotaract Club, a Rotary extension for members ages 18 to 30. We all enjoyed the combined event and look forward to doing it again in the future.
Rotary's Annual Meet and Greet & the Chamber's MI5
On Thursday October 8th, at the Innisfil Town Hall Community Rooms, the Rotary Club of Innisfil and the Innisfil Chamber of Commerce are partnering for a great networking and meet and greet event. You will see lots of great initiatives and events that both the organizations host or participate and learn about how they work in the community and globally. The Rotary Train engine, ShelterBox, and an overview of the Rotary Trail will be there.
This is a free event, with light refreshments, and is from 5pm to 7:30pm. We hope you can make it out and remember to bring your business cards. You never know who you are going to meet up with!

After 6 years of hosting their morning meetings at the Innisfil Recreation Complex (IRC) / YMCA the Rotary Club of Innisfil is moving to the Innisfil Library Lakeshore Branch at 967 Innisfil Beach Road in Alcona on Wednesday September 23rd. We have seen a lot of growth during our time at the IRC/YMCA and the opportunity to meet at the Library became available. The meetings will continue to start at 7:30am and go to 8:30am and we are looking forward to meeting at the Library!
In 2010 the Club was chartered and held their Gala at the IRC/YMCA. Not only did they celebrate their inaugural charter but also 100 years of Rotary in Canada. Interestingly enough, when the first Canadian Rotary Club was chartered in 1910 it was in Winnipeg and they too held their meetings at the local YMCA. We have enjoyed a wonderful six years with the location and the staff of the YMCA who set up our meeting room and supplied us with coffee every Wednesday morning.
We continue to have a strong relationship with the YMCA in Innisfil as we will continue to hold our annual Lights and Wishes event where we bring children and their families to the YMCA to meet with Santa, do arts and crafts, ride the Rotary Train and fundraise for the Strong Kids campaign. The Club also has their Rotary Garden, hosts the annual Family Fun Day, and will be building the Rotary Trail that is accessible from the IRC/YMCA location so you can see we will still have a strong relationship and presence with the community through the IRC and YMCA.
Everyone is welcome to join us at any of our meetings on Wednesday mornings at our new location at the Innisfil Library's Lakeshore Branch. We have great speakers and you can hear about all the great events and community services happening in Innisfil and globally. Come and check us out!

On Saturday September 12 the Toronto North/Cookstown KOA hosted a classic car show that highlighted cars, trucks, and motorcycles of all makes, years, and models. The gray skies didn't hamper the attendance with lots of attendees and vehicles. There was a delicious Rotary BBQ, games, raffles, and music! The Rotary Club of Innisfil manned the entrance to accept Innisfil Foodbank items or donations to help with the Rotary Club's community projects. We are looking forward to participating again next year!
On August 19th the Rotary Club of Innisfil inducted its newest member, Ryan Purdy, General Manager of the Innisfil YMCA.
Ryan brings to the Club a great amount of experience with the community of Innisfil through the YMCA, a not-for-profit organization that loves to help engage families, youth, and the young-at-heart keep fit and engaged in healthy activities. We are excited in having Ryan join the Club.
The Innisfil Food Bank is in need of:

•pancake mix & syrup
•jams and spreads
•Side Kicks
• condiments such as ketchup, mustard, mayo, etc.
If you are able please bring any of these (or other) items to our July 8th Rotary meeting or directly to the Innisfil Food Bank it would be greatly appreciated. Financial donations are also accepted.
On Saturday June 20th the 5th Annual Innisfil Rotary Family Fun Day was held. This free event saw the local community come and check out the services and organizations within our borders of Innisfil. This also gave those who attended an opportunity enjoy an event with free hot dogs, refreshments, popcorn, giveaways from different organizations, and a ride on the Rotary Train.
There was some of our local services such as South Simcoe Police, Fireman, Paramedics, and the Town of Innisfil in attendance. Organizations such as the Beaver, Cubs & Scouts, Horticultural and the Historical Societies, Lefroy Minor Hockey, Snow Dogs, the Innisfil Chamber of Commerce, and Lion's Clubs, to name a few, participated in building awareness of their organizations.
Our Rotary Club also had the ShelterBox organization on site with Susie and Shawn Parker educating us on disaster relief globally and what we can do to help by sponsoring a ShelterBox. There was also the celebration of Aboriginal Day in Innisfil.
The weather and turnout was fantastic and look forward to doing it again next year!
Innisfil Rotary Family Fun Day coming this Saturday June 20th!
This past weekend the Rotary Club of Innisfil had their Beverage Tent at the Innisfil Beach Park for the 20th Anniversary of Innisfil's Summerfest. We saw some great music on Friday (Country), Saturday (Bruce Springsteen Tribute Band), Innisfil's Got Talent, and on Sunday, the Martel's.
The rain didn't dampen the spirits of some of the 250+ that came out to see the Martels who were back for another incredible concert of 50's and 60's Rock and Roll for the 2015 "Our Last Date Tour" Retirement Year. If you missed the Martels the Barrie Rotary Club has them coming to Kempenfest on Monday August 3rd from 2pm to 6pm. Hope to see you there!
A Quad Club Event held by the Rotary Clubs of Innisfil, Barrie, Huronia, and Kempenfelt on Thursday March 12, 2015 to celebrate Rotary Day and the Rotary International theme of Light Up Rotary.

On June 23rd, 2012 the Town of Innisfil and the Rotary Club of Innisfil co-hosted at the Innisfil Recreation Centre/YMCA the 2nd Annual Family Fun Day. Here the residents of Innisfil had a chance to visit with the different Town Services, Emergency Service Providers, Regional and Local Service Clubs and Awareness Groups. It was a fantastic day of sun, information and handouts, a BBQ and Rotary Train rides. We are all looking forward to doing it again next year. The third annual Celebrate Lake Simcoe takes place at Innisfil Beach Park on Saturday, July 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This is a family fun and learning day no one will want to miss:
· Visitors will hear the stories about Lake Simcoe during the War of 1812 while discovering how to help their lake recover.
· A military encampment, courtesy of the Historical Military Establishment of Upper Canada and Southern Georgian Bay 1812 Bicentennial, will be on guard against imminent threat of an American invasion from the lake.
· Led by a Town Crier, Lord and Lady Simcoe will return to view the state of their lake and greet visitors.
· Artists will be painting the lake “en plein air” and visitors will have the opportunity to paint their own version of Lake Simcoe.
· Lots of fascinating interactive displays and activities will keep everyone busy throughout the day and raise awareness, not only about the plight of Lake Simcoe, but about all the work underway to help the lake recover.
· Music by Doug Pettigrew & Friends and Bridget Gowan will keep everyone entertained morning and afternoon.
· Ladies of the Lake will show a preview of the Lake Simcoe Water Centre for Innovation, Research and Learning and provide a place for everyone to colour water scenes and “blessing boats”.
· The Rotary Train will take visitors on tours around the park.
· The Celtic Festival organizers will be selling fresh-boiled and buttered Ontario corn all day long.
· We will be blessing and sending messages to the lake at the end of the day in bio degradable boats launched from the beach.
· The Towns of Bradford-West Gwillimbury and Oro-Medonte will be joining us this year to demonstrate the work they are doing on behalf of Lake Simcoe.

This annual event is organized by a volunteer group of Lake Simcoe community residents, who are committed to preserving the health of Lake Simcoe by celebrating its past, raising awareness about its present condition and envisioning its future health.
In March of this year, the Rotary Club of Innisfil, fellow Rotarians across Canada, friends and family set off to aid displaced Haitian refugees in the Dominican Republic. In March a group of our Innisfil Rotarians, friends, and family members are heading to the Dominican Republic to help in relief efforts for displaced Haitians due to the 2010 earthquake. Included in this relief effort is a contingent of doctors, dentists, nurses, dental assistants, and construction teams. In March, seven of our members will be participating in a Humanitarian Relief Effort to help with displaced Haitians in the Dominican Republic. Included in the trip down are Doctors, Dentists, Nurses, Dental Assistants, and Construction specialists. On January 18th, 2012 the Rotary Club of Innisfil had a lot to celebrate. Inducting seven members into the Paul Harris Fellowship, recognizing a member for his pre-Rotarian accomplishments that saw him achieve a PHF in 2000, honouring two special people and celebrating our accomplishments in 2011.
After the Rotary Club of Innisfil participated in a day of Dragon Boat races, selling Beaver tickets and holding a fundraising BBQ at an Innisfil Auction, the fellowship continued on Sunday with a BBQ at Susie and Shawn Parkers.
Our Rotary has partnered up with Touch of Class Auctions to sell food and drinks to all that come out to their local auctions in order to fundraise for community projects.
With the count of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, the Rotary Club of Innisfil buried their paddles in Kempenfelt Bay. With Mother Nature on their side they participated in an amazing race where they saw challenges, successes and drama. Who knew what the day would bring. An experience like no other!
The Innisfil Rotary Club celebrated its first year anniversary of being chartered by adding a new member. Doug Weber was inducted on June 15th admist balloons and streamers with his wife Cheryl watching. At his induction ceremony Doug recounted how involved his Father-in-law has been in Rotary and how fullfilling it has been. He is looking forward to helping out in the Innisfil community. It was Mardi Gras in Barrie, or at least at the Rotary Club of Innisfil's Lobsterfest table. Thanks to Susie Parker who brought the theme back from the New Orleans Rotary Convention with beeds, streamers, and face masks. The lobster and roast beef dinner was fantastic, We all came away feeling extremely satisfied having all eaten our fill - some more than others! There was dancing, music and great prizes to be won. There was great fellowship between the clubs and a large representation from around our region. We would all like to thank the Rotary Club of Barrie Huronia for hosting the event and are hoping next year to get all of our members out.
On June 1st our Club inducted our newest Rotarian. Please help us welcome Tom Keila to the membership!
The main objective of Rotary is service and our motto is Service Above Self. This reaches out – in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. Rotary also supports programs for youth, educational opportunities and international exchanges for students, teachers and other professionals, and vocation and career development. As our newest member we are looking forward to having Tom help us reach these goals in our community and abroad.
On Wednesday, May 15th the Rotary Club of Innisfil inducted three new members – Jason Reynar, Anne Kell, and Tyler Rollins. They were welcomed into the club by members, family and friends.
The weather couldn't dampen the spirits of the Rotary Club of Innisfil and their family, friends and neighbours on Saturday May 14th for the Annual Pitch-in Day. Out in full force they started at the Innisfil YMCA and then headed to the 7th line from Hwy 11 to the 10th Sideroad. Pulling a multitude of tires, oil jugs, assorted garden planters, toys, flooring, and pink toilets to name just a few items. When we all came together at the end the stories of wet feet, muddied clothing, garbage horror stories and drivers saluting our efforts warmed our hearts and encouraged us knowing that it was all worthwhile. One of the residents of the 7th Line noticed we were cleaning up the road and came out to help. Having struggled with people dumping garbage on his property he recounted how he spends $100's each year cleaning up and taking things to the dump. He truly appreciated the hard work that our Rotary Club was doing for him and his neighbours. Thanks to our Rotary Organizers Al Gilchrist, Barry Rutledge and Marilynn Roberts for getting us geared up. It can be said that we all felt damp, tired, and sore but satisfied for a job well done!
As of June 17th, 2010 the Innisfil Rotary Club is officially a Chartered Club!

Looking for a fun run or to join family and friends in a walkathon close to home? The Rotary Club of Innisfil is hosting its first annual Fun Run and Walkathon on Saturday May 23rd from 9am to 12 Noon at the Innisfil Beach Park.
The Lion's Club of Thornton hosted their annual Chili Challenge on Saturday February18th this year and with the help of Innisfil's Rotary Club member, Ché MacInnis, they regained their crown as the best chili in town! With the support of family, friends and of course our Rotary Club members Ché's chili was voted the best. Well done Ché!

celebrating her recent win to become Innisfil's first female mayor.
Barb
has played a major role in helping the Rotary Club of Innisfil reach
chartering status this past June and her commitment to the community is
evident through her service with the club. We look forward to the
leadership that Barb will bring to the town as she is officially sworn
in as mayor on December 1, 2010.
